What is Lasix used for?

Lasix has a diuretic effect. Lasix increases the amount of urine passed, thereby causing the body to lose water and salt. This medicine helps to treat hypertension. It also helps to reduce the swelling and water retention caused by some certain medical conditions, such as liver, heart or kidney disease. There is also Generic Lasix available.

What should I inform my health care provider about before I start taking this medicine?

Your doctor should be informed about whether you any conditions listed below applys to you:

• diabetes
• hearing problems
• heart problem
• previous heart attack
• diarrhea
• kidney disease, small amounts of urine, or difficulty passing urine
• liver disease
• low magnesium, potassium, calcium,sodium or chloride levels in blood
• pancreatitis
• gout
• systemic lupus erythematosus
• allergic reaction to Lasix or other medicines
• breast-feeding
• pregnant

How is lasix taken?

Lasix tablets are taken by mouth. Keep to the directions on the label of the drug. Swallow the tablets with some water. If Lasix causes upset stomach, take it with some food or milk. Take your doses at the same time every day. Never take your medication more often than prescribed. Remember that you will urinate frequently after taking Lasix. Lasix should not be taken at bedtime.

What to do if I miss my dose?

If you missed your dose and too much time has not yet passwed, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go on ewith your dosing shedule.

What drugs may interact with Lasix?

• certain antibiotics given by injection
• clofibrate
• cholestyramine
• cisplatin
• nitroglycerin
• colestipol
• dofetilide
• lithium
• heart medicines such as digoxin
• certain hormones such as hydrocortisone, fludrocortisones or cortisone
• phenytoin
• medicines for diabetes
• medicine for treating hyprtension
• medicines used for relaxing muscles before surgery
• monoamine oxidase inhibitors
• water pills
• anti-inflammatory drugs

Before starting to take Lasix, tell your health care professional about all other drugs you are taking, including medicinesb requring no prescribtion and suppliments. Also let your health care professional know if you are a frequent user of drinks containing alcohol or caffeine, if you smoke or use recreational drugs. These may have negative effect on the way your medication works. Check with your doctor before stopping or starting any medications.

What side effects may cause Lasix?

The severe side effects that happen rarely include:

• mood changes
• blood in urine
• dry mouth
• fever or chills
• sore throat
• loss of hearing
• pulpitations
• diarrhea
• back or side pain
• muscle pain or weakness
• cramps
• nausea, vomiting
• stomach disorder
• increased thirst
• rash
• tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
• unusual weakness

What is the shelf life of the pills?

• The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
