Viagra ( other name for the drug is Sildenafil) is a blue tablets in a shape of diamond and released in 25, 50, and 100 mg tablets for treating erectile dysfunction. Revatio is manufactured 20 mg tablets and intended for the treatment pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Drug class and mechanism

Safety information

Viagra is contraindicated to patients who regularly use medicines containing nitrates. (nitrate containing drugs are usually used to treat heart-related problems).

You should discuss your general health state with your physician to make sure that your healthy status allows you to engage in sexual activity. In case if you experience nausea, chest pains, or any other discomforts during sexual activity, seek emergency medical help.

Although erections lasting for more than 4 hours may occur rarely with all ED treatments in this drug class, to avoid long-term injuries, it is important to seek immediate medical help.

If you are above the age of 65, or have severe liver or kidney disorders, your doctor may advice you to start you at a low dose of Viagra (25mg.). If you are on protease inhibitors, such as ones used for the treatment of HIV, your doctor may recommend a 25-mg in 2 days.

In rare instances, men using PDE5 inhibitors (medications for treating impotence) reported a sudden change or loss of vision. It was not possible to ascertain whether these events are associated directly with these medicines or some other factors. If decrease or loss of vision occurs to you while taking Viagra, stop taking it to be on the safe side and check with physician.

Side Effects

The serious but rare Viagra`s side effects are the following: priapism, stroke, myocardial infarction, increased intraocular pressure, severe hypotension and ventricular arrhythmias.

Common side effects of Viagra are the following ones: sneezing, headache, flushing, dyspepsia, palpitations and photophobia.

Patients who also use Protease inhibitors for the treatment of HIV should use Viagra with caution. Protease inhibitors may block the absorption of Viagra. Taking these protease inhibitors in combination with Viagra may increase the risk of severe side-effect occurrence. It is strongly recommended that patients who use protease inhibitors decrease their dosage of Viagra. No more than one 25-mg tablet every 48 hours would be perfect.

Some people who take Viagra complain of seeing everything in blue tint. Others reported blurriness and loss of vision.

When Viagra is taken with an alpha blocker, low blood pressure may occur, but it is possible to avoid it if they are taken at least four hours apart.
