What is Neurontin?
Neurontin is an anticonvulsant medication. The active ingredient in Neurontin is gabapentin which is formulated as tablets, capsules and an oral solution.
Drug Uses
Neurontin is available by prescription only. Neurontin is used to treat epileptic seizures in adults and children over the age of 12 years. Neurontin may be used with other medications to treat seizures in children 3-12 years of age. Neurontin is also used to treat pain associated with herpes viruses.
Dosage
Neurontin should be taken as prescribed by a doctor. Neurontin does not have to be taken with food. Never increase or decrease the dose without consulting a doctor.
Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, it can be taken as soon as you remember, as long as it does not clash with the next scheduled dose. In this case, rather skip the missed dose. Never take a double dose.
Precautions
Do not take Neurontin if you are allergic to gabapentin.
Do not stop taking Neurontin even if there is a significant reduction in seizures.
Wear a medical alert bracelet or carry a medical ID card stating that you are using Neurontin. In the event of an emergency, the medical personnel attending to you will need to know that you suffer with seizures.
Patients with kidney, liver or heart disease may need adjusted doses of Neurontin.
Neurontin may cause depression or suicidal thoughts. Family members, or care-givers, should report any behavioral changes to the patient
