What is Elavil?
Elavil is a tricyclic antidepressant. The active ingredient in Elavil is amitriptyline which is dispensed as oral tablets (10mg, 25mg, 50mg, 75mg, 100mg and 150mg).
Drug Uses
Elavil is prescribed to treat depression and associated symptoms. The active ingredient works by correcting the levels of chemicals in the brain.

Dose
Elavil must always be used as directed. Do not make adjustments to the dose before speaking to a doctor. Elavil may be taken with or without food.
Do not suddenly stop taking Elavil without talking to your doctor. Sudden discontinuance can cause very uncomfortable side-effects.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, it may be taken when you remember. However, do not take the missed dose near the time of the next scheduled dose. In this case, ignore the missed dose. Never double-up on a dose.
Warnings and Precautions
Do not use Elavil if you are allergic to amitriptyline.
Do not use Elavil if you have had a recent heart attack.
Tell your doctor if you have a history of heart attack, seizures or stroke, and if you suffer with any of the following: bipolar disorder, heart disease, schizophrenia, diabetes, glaucoma, problems urinating, or an overactive thyroid.
In the initial phase of treatment with antidepressants, patients may experience suicidal thoughts. If there are any changes in behavior or mood, family members should report this to the patient
